은혜와 평강이 여러분에게 있기를 바랍니다, 사랑하는 교회여.
Every year in Korea, the season of Chuseok arrives like a song carried on the wind. The highways swell
with cars returning to their roots, homes come alive with laughter, tables bend under the weight of fruit
and rice cakes, and generations meet around the same table to remember. Chuseok is more than a holiday
it is memory wrapped in gratitude; it is heritage carried in the hands of the living and passed on to the
hands of the young.
해마다 한국에는 추석이라는 계절이 바람에 실린 노래처럼 찾아옵니다. 고향을 향해 도로는
차들로 붐비고, 집마다 웃음이 가득하며, 과일과 송편으로 상이 휘어지고, 세대가 한 상에 모여
기억을 나눕니다. 추석은 단순한 명절이 아니라 감사로 감싼 기억이며, 살아있는 이들의 손에 들려
젊은 세대의 손으로 전해지는 유산입니다.
But Israel too had its own season of memory. It was not tied to the turning of autumn or the ripening of
fields. It was every day, morning and evening, the heartbeat of their identity. Fathers spoke it to their sons,
mothers whispered it to their daughters, children recited it as they drifted to sleep. The words were
simple, yet thundered through history:
그러나 이스라엘에도 그들만의 기억의 계절이 있었습니다. 그것은 가을의 변화나 곡식의 익음에
묶인 것이 아니었습니다. 그것은 매일, 아침과 저녁마다, 그들의 정체성의 심장이었습니다.
아버지는 아들에게, 어머니는 딸에게 속삭였고, 아이들은 잠들기 전 읊조렸습니다. 그 말은
단순했으나 역사를 울리며 메아리쳤습니다.
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” (Deut. 6:4–5)
“이스라엘아 들으라. 우리 하나님 여호와는 오직 유일한 여호와이시니, 너는 마음을 다하고
성품을 다하고 힘을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하라.” (신명기 6:4–5)
This was the Shema. To hear. To remember. To live. To pass on. It was their inheritance.
이것이 바로 쉐마였습니다. 듣고, 기억하고, 살아내고, 전하는 것. 이것이 그들의 유산이었습니다.
In a land crowded with idols and false gods, Israel stood and confessed: The LORD is one. Other nations
bowed to many; Israel clung to One. They could lose land, status, even freedom but as long as they
remembered God, they remained his people.

우상과 거짓 신들로 가득한 땅에서, 이스라엘은 이렇게 고백했습니다. 여호와는 한 분이시다. 다른
민족은 많은 신들에게 절했지만, 이스라엘은 오직 한 분께 매달렸습니다. 그들은 땅도, 지위도,
자유도 잃을 수 있었지만, 하나님을 기억하는 한 하나님의 백성이었습니다.
Chuseok reminds us of our ancestors, their names etched in stone, their stories retold at the table. Yet
Scripture whispers with a sharper urgency: Remember the Lord. As Psalm 127:1 warns, “Unless the
LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Bloodline may falter, wealth may fade,
tradition may shift, but if the Lord is our foundation, our house will stand.
추석은 우리의 조상을 떠올리게 합니다. 그들의 이름은 돌에 새겨지고, 그들의 이야기는 식탁에서
전해집니다. 그러나 성경은 더 절박하게 속삭입니다. 여호와를 기억하라. 시편 127 편 1 절은
경고합니다. “여호와께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면 세우는 자의 수고가 헛되며.” 혈통은 흔들릴 수
있고, 재산은 사라질 수 있고, 전통은 바뀔 수 있습니다. 그러나 주님이 우리의 기초라면 우리의
집은 견고히 설 것입니다.
And the Shema does not pause at remembrance. It rushes deeper: “Love the LORD your God with all
your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.” This is not half-hearted love, not devotion by
convenience, not leftovers on the table of God. Korean families would never bring half-spoiled fruit or
broken offerings to a Chuseok table.
그리고 쉐마는 단순히 기억에서 멈추지 않습니다. 더 깊이 나아갑니다. “너는 마음을 다하고
성품을 다하고 힘을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하라.” 이것은 반쪽짜리 사랑이 아닙니다.
상황에 따라 드리는 헌신도 아니며, 하나님의 상에 남은 것을 내어놓는 것도 아닙니다. 한국의
가정은 추석 상에 썩은 과일이나 깨진 음식을 올리지 않습니다. 최고의 것으로 정성을 다해
드립니다.They prepare the finest to show honor. How much more does the living God deserve the very
best of us our thoughts, our breath, our strength, our wealth, our everything? Jesus Himself called this
the greatest commandment (Matt. 22:37). Paul pleaded with us to offer our very lives as living sacrifices
(Rom. 12:1).
살아계신 하나님께는 그보다 더한 최상의 것을 드려야 하지 않겠습니까? 우리의 생각, 호흡, 힘,
재물, 모든 것 말입니다. 예수님께서도 이것을 가장 큰 계명이라 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 22:37).
바울은 우리의 삶 전체를 산 제사로 드리라고 간청했습니다(로마서 12:1).
But there is more. The Shema presses beyond memory and devotion into responsibility: “You shall teach
them diligently to your children… when you sit, when you walk, when you lie down, when you rise.” At
Chuseok, families pass down recipes, rituals, and surnames. Yet Scripture cries: the greatest inheritance is
not property, not education, not even tradition it is faith. “Train up a child in the way he should go,”
Proverbs says, “and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Prov. 22:6).

그러나 거기서 끝이 아닙니다. 쉐마는 기억과 헌신을 넘어 책임으로 나아갑니다. “네 자녀에게
부지런히 가르치라… 네가 앉아 있을 때에든, 길을 갈 때에든, 누워 있을 때에든, 일어날 때에든.”
추석에 가족은 요리법, 의식, 성씨를 전합니다. 그러나 성경은 외칩니다. 가장 위대한 유산은
재산도, 교육도, 전통도 아닌 바로 ‘믿음’입니다. 잠언은 말합니다. “마땅히 행할 길을 아이에게
가르치라. 그리하면 늙어도 그것을 떠나지 아니하리라.” (잠언 22:6)
Parents, your living room is a sanctuary, your dining table an altar, your bedtime prayers the liturgy of the
next generation. Paul remembered Timothy’s faith, first seen in his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice
(2 Tim. 1:5). The world will give your children many stories, but only you can give them the story that
saves.
부모들이여, 여러분의 거실은 성소이고, 여러분의 식탁은 제단이며, 잠자리의 기도는 다음 세대를
위한 예배입니다. 바울은 디모데의 믿음을 기억했습니다. 그것은 그의 할머니 로이스와 어머니
유니게에게서 먼저 보인 믿음이었습니다(디모데후서 1:5). 세상은 여러분의 자녀에게 많은
이야기를 주겠지만, 구원하는 이야기를 줄 수 있는 이는 여러분뿐입니다.
Finally, the Shema commanded Israel to mark their lives with God’s Word tied on their hands, bound
before their eyes, written on doorframes and gates. Faith was not a Sabbath ceremony but a rhythm for
sunrise and sunset, for marketplaces and fields, for homes and streets.
마지막으로, 쉐마는 이스라엘에게 하나님의 말씀으로 삶을 새기라고 명령했습니다. 손목에 매고,
눈 앞에 두고, 문설주와 성문에 기록하라고 했습니다. 믿음은 안식일의 의식이 아니라, 해 뜨고
지는 리듬이었고, 시장과 밭에서, 가정과 길 위에서 살아내는 삶이었습니다.
In Korea, walls often bear calligraphy of wisdom and proverbs. But our walls, and even more our lives,
must bear the living Word of God. James warns us not to be hearers only, but doers of the Word (James
1:22). True faith bleeds into daily life how we speak, how we forgive, how we work, how we love.
한국의 벽에는 지혜와 속담이 서예로 새겨지곤 합니다. 그러나 우리의 벽, 더 나아가 우리의 삶은
살아있는 하나님의 말씀을 새겨야 합니다. 야고보는 우리가 듣기만 하는 자가 아니라 행하는 자가
되어야 한다고 경고합니다(야고보서 1:22). 참된 믿음은 일상에 스며듭니다. 우리가 말하는 법,
용서하는 법, 일하는 법, 사랑하는 법 속에 녹아듭니다.Perhaps you are visiting church this Chuseok
or joining family for worship though faith is not yet your own. Hear this: God’s invitation is not limited to
one family line or one tradition. The inheritance of faith is a gift freely offered in Jesus Christ. Just as
Chuseok opens its table to every member of the family, so Christ opens His table to all who come to Him.
This inheritance can begin with you today.

혹시 여러분 중 추석이라 교회를 방문했거나 가족과 함께 예배에 참석했지만 아직 믿음이 내 것이
아닌 분이 계십니까? 들어 보십시오. 하나님의 초청은 특정 가문이나 전통에 제한되지 않습니다.
믿음의 유산은 예수 그리스도 안에서 값없이 주어진 선물입니다. 추석의 식탁이 모든 가족에게
열려 있듯, 그리스도의 식탁도 그에게 나아오는 모든 이에게 열려 있습니다. 이 유산은 오늘
여러분에게서 시작될 수 있습니다.
So, we stand here at Chuseok, surrounded by memories and tradition. We give thanks for ancestors, for
family, and for the harvest of the land. But the Shema pierces us with a greater call. Chuseok celebrates
memory the Shema calls us to remember the Lord. Chuseok celebrates inheritance the Scriptures call us
to pass on faith. Chuseok celebrates harvest God calls us to seek the harvest of souls and generations
changed by His Word.
그러므로 우리는 추석이라는 자리에서, 기억과 전통에 둘러싸여 서 있습니다. 조상에게, 가족에게,
땅의 수확에 감사드립니다. 그러나 쉐마는 우리에게 더 큰 부름을 찌르듯 들려줍니다. 추석은
기억을 기념하지만, 쉐마는 주님을 기억하라 부릅니다. 추석은 유산을 전하지만, 성경은 믿음을
전하라 외칩니다. 추석은 수확을 기뻐하지만, 하나님은 영혼의 수확, 그분의 말씀으로 세대가
변화되는 추수를 구하십니다.And we cannot forget this: Jesus Christ fulfilled the Shema perfectly. He
loved the Father with all His heart, all His soul, and all His strength even to the cross. And by His
sacrifice, we are welcomed into God’s eternal family, grafted into a heritage that never fades, into a faith
that endures beyond death.
그리고 잊지 말아야 합니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 쉐마를 완벽히 성취하셨습니다. 그분은 마음과
영혼과 힘을 다하여 아버지를 사랑하셨습니다. 십자가에 이르기까지. 그분의 희생으로 우리는
하나님의 영원한 가족 안으로 환영받고, 사라지지 않는 유산에 접붙임 받고, 죽음을 넘어서는 믿음
안으로 들어가게 되었습니다.So this Chuseok, let us not stop at fruit on the table or stories at the
graveyard site. Let us set before our children and our children’s children the greatest treasure of all a
living, burning faith in God, carried forward from generation to generation.
그러므로 이번 추석, 단지 상 위의 과일이나 묘소에서의 이야기에 멈추지 맙시다. 우리 자녀와
자녀의 자녀에게 가장 큰 보물을 물려줍시다. 살아 있고 타오르는 믿음, 세대를 넘어 전해지는
하나님 신앙을.
