1 What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces[A] of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[B] 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,[C] Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you know God—or rather are known by God —how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces[D] ? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.
12 I plead with you, brothers and sisters, become like me, for I became like you. You did me no wrong.
No Longer Slaves, But Sons
Galatians 4:1–12

We began this journey with Paul’s cry in chapter 1: “There is no other gospel.” In chapter 2, he declared: “We are justified by faith alone.” Now in chapter 4, Paul’s voice shakes with anguish: “My little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you” (Gal. 4:19). This is not dry doctrine it is a father weeping for his children who are walking back into chains after Christ has set them free.
우리는 이 여정을 1장에서 바울의 외침, “다른 복음은 없다”로 시작했습니다. 2장에서는 “우리는 오직 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받는다”라고 선언했습니다. 이제 4장에 들어와서 바울의 음성은 고통으로 떨립니다: “나의 작은 자녀들아 내가 다시 너희를 위하여 산고의 고통을 겪노라 이는 그리스도께서 너희 안에 세워질 때까지라.” (갈라디아서 4:19) 이것은 건조한 교리가 아니라, 그리스도께서 그들을 자유케 하신 뒤 다시 사슬 속으로 걸어 들어가는 자녀들을 위해 우는 아버지의 탄식입니다.
Paul says before Christ came, we were like heirs still under guardians. Though we were meant for inheritance, we lived no better than slaves bound by law, crushed by rituals, ruled by fear. But then the turning point came: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Gal. 4:4–5). This is the gospel. Christ took our place under the curse of slavery so that we might take His place as sons beloved of the Father.
바울은 그리스도께서 오시기 전 우리가 후사로서도 아직 보호자 아래에 있는 자와 같았다고 말합니다. 비록 상속을 받도록 예정되었으나, 우리는 율법에 얽매인 노예와 다를 바 없이 살았고 의식에 짓눌리며 두려움에 지배당했습니다. 그러나 전환점이 왔습니다: “때가 차매 하나님이 아들을 보내시되 여자에게서 나시고 율법 아래 나시어 율법 아래 있는 자들을 속량하시고 우리로 아들의 명분을 얻게 하려 하심이라.” (갈라디아서 4:4–5) 이것이 복음입니다. 그리스도께서 우리의 대신으로 노예 상태의 저주 아래에 들어가심으로 우리가 아버지께 사랑받는 아들로서의 자리를 얻게 하셨습니다.
And Paul shouts the wonder of it: “Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father!” (Gal. 4:6). Imagine this miracle. The Spirit Himself teaches our trembling lips to say what we never dared before not “Judge, Judge,” not “Master, Master,” but “Abba.” Papa. Daddy. The very word Jesus used in Gethsemane. The Spirit puts the cry of Jesus into our hearts until we know we belong.

But Paul’s trembling grows stronger: “So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God” (Gal. 4:7). Church, let us ask: Do we live like heirs, or do we still crawl like slaves? Too many today live as though the cross did not thunder “It is finished” (John 19:30). We chain ourselves again to laws of performance “If I do enough, maybe God will accept me.” We bow before laws of approval family, culture, society whispering, “You must earn your worth.” We drag invisible chains of shame, guilt, fear. Some live under addiction. Some under the slavery of endless work and burnout. Some under the law of money that never satisfies. And some still kneel before religious rituals as if Christ had not died once for all.

Paul pleads: “Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that are not gods. But now that you have come to know God or rather to be known by God how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world?” (Gal. 4:8–9). His words are like a father watching a child freed from prison walk back into the cell and close the door again. Can you hear his tears? “I fear for you.”
바울은 간절히 묻습니다: “너희가 이전에는 하나님을 알지 못할 때에는 신이 아닌 자들에게 매여 있더니 이제는 하나님을 알게 되었거나 오히려 하나님께 알려진 자가 되었으니 어찌하여 다시 연약하고 무익한 세상 초등학문으로 돌아가느냐?” (갈라디아서 4:8–9) 그의 말은 마치 감옥에서 풀려난 자녀가 스스로 다시 그 감방으로 걸어가 문을 닫는 것을 지켜보는 아버지의 모습과 같습니다. 그의 눈물을 들을 수 있습니까? “내가 너희를 위하여 두려워하노라.”
Let me illustrate. Imagine a child taken from an orphanage into a new home. The papers are signed, the adoption sealed. The father calls him son, the mother embraces him as her own. But at night, the child sneaks back to the orphanage, knocks on the locked gate, and says, “Please let me back in. I don’t belong at the table.” That is the tragedy Paul is describing. That is what happens every time we live as slaves when God has called us sons.
비유로 설명하겠습니다. 고아원에서 새 가정으로 데려온 아이를 상상해 보십시오. 서류에 서명이 되고 입양이 확정됩니다. 아버지는 그를 아들이라 부르고 어머니는 그를 자신의 자녀로 껴안습니다. 그러나 밤에 그 아이는 몰래 고아원으로 돌아가 잠긴 문을 두드리며 말합니다, “제발 다시 들여보내 주세요. 저는 식탁에 앉을 자격이 없어요.” 이것이 바울이 말하는 비극입니다. 하나님께서 우리를 아들로 부르셨을 때 우리가 종으로 살 때마다 바로 이런 일이 일어납니다.
Beloved, this is the Spirit’s cry for us today. You are not a slave. You are not forgotten. You are not forsaken. You are a son, a daughter, an heir. The blood of Christ speaks louder than your failures. The Spirit within you cries louder than your shame. And the Father above you whispers louder than the accusations of the enemy: “You are mine.”
사랑하는 여러분, 이것이 오늘 우리를 향한 성령의 부르짖음입니다. 여러분은 종이 아닙니다. 여러분은 잊혀진 존재가 아닙니다. 여러분은 버림받지 않았습니다. 여러분은 아들이며 딸이며 상속자입니다. 그리스도의 피는 여러분의 실패보다 더 크게 말합니다. 여러분 안의 성령은 여러분의 수치보다 더 크게 부르짖습니다. 그리고 위에 계신 아버지는 원수의 비난보다 더 크게 속삭이십니다: “너는 내 것이다.”
Some of you sing about freedom but still live condemned. Some of you preach grace but secretly carry guilt. Some of you pray “Father” with your lips but tremble as though He were still only your Judge. Today the Spirit of adoption calls you home. Today the Father says, “Walk as my child. Leave the chains. You are no longer a slave.”
어떤 사람들은 자유에 대해 노래하지만 여전히 정죄 가운데 살고 있습니다. 어떤 사람들은 은혜를 설교하지만 은밀히 죄책감을 지니고 있습니다. 어떤 이들은 입으로 ‘아버지’라 부르며 기도하지만 여전히 그분이 오직 심판자이신 것처럼 떨고 있습니다. 오늘 입양의 성령이 여러분을 집으로 부릅니다. 오늘 아버지는 말씀하십니다, “내 자녀로 걸으라. 사슬을 벗어버려라. 너는 더 이상 종이 아니다.”
This is not just doctrine it is destiny. Sons inherit. Sons reign. Sons live in the Spirit, not in fear. If we are sons, then we are heirs of eternal glory. And this inheritance cannot be broken. The covenant stands, the promise holds, and the Spirit testifies within us.
이것은 단지 교리가 아니라 운명입니다. 아들은 유업을 상속받고, 아들은 다스리며, 아들은 두려움이 아니라 성령 안에서 삶을 삽니다. 우리가 아들이라면 영광의 유업을 이을 자들입니다. 이 유업은 깨뜨릴 수 없습니다. 언약은 굳건히 서 있고 약속은 지속되며 성령이 우리 안에서 증거합니다.
So let us rise as sons and daughters of God. Let us live not in fear, not in shame, not in bondage, but in faith, crying with full hearts: “Abba, Father.”
그러므로 하나님의 아들·딸로서 일어납시다. 두려움도 수치도 속박도 아닌 믿음 안에서 살며 온 마음으로 외칩시다: “아바, 아버지.”
Let this cry echo not only in our churches but in our homes, our workplaces, our nations: “No longer slaves, but sons. The righteous shall live by faith.”
이 외침이 우리 교회 안에만 머물지 않고 우리의 가정, 일터, 나라까지 울려 퍼지게 합시다: “더 이상 종이 아니라 아들이다. 의인은 믿음으로 살리라.”
