6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel — 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!
10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
11 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.
13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. 14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being. 17 I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus.
Galatians 1: 6-17 No Other Gospel
Shalom. Welcome to worship at LIFECEM. Today we begin our new preaching series in the book of Galatians. May the Lord anchor us in the truth that there is no other gospel but Christ alone.
샬롬. LIFECEM 예배에 오신 여러분을 환영합니다. 오늘 우리는 갈라디아서 강해 시리즈를 새롭게 시작합니다. 주님께서 우리를 붙들어 주시기를 원합니다. 오직 그리스도 외에는 다른 복음이 없다는 진리에 굳게 서도록 말입니다.
When Paul wrote to the Galatians, he was writing not to one church, but to a whole province of the Roman Empire much like Gyeonggi-do Province here in Korea. Inside Galatia were cities like Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe. On Paul’s first missionary journey (Acts 13–14), he and Barnabas entered this province and preached the gospel.
바울이 갈라디아인들에게 편지를 썼을 때, 그는 한 교회가 아니라 로마 제국의 한 도 전체에 쓰고 있었습니다. 마치 오늘날 한국의 경기도와 같은 곳이었습니다. 갈라디아 안에는 비시디아 안디옥, 이고니온, 루스드라, 더베와 같은 도시들이 있었습니다. 바울은 1차 선교 여행(사도행전 13–14장) 때 바나바와 함께 이 지역에 들어가 복음을 전했습니다.
It was not easy. In Pisidian Antioch, the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord, but soon persecution arose. In Iconium, both Jews and Greeks believed, but opposition forced them out. In Lystra, Paul healed a crippled man, and the people tried to worship him as a god yet days later, stirred up by enemies, they stoned him and dragged him out, leaving him for dead. And in Derbe, many more came to faith. This was how the Galatian churches were born: through suffering, through miracles, through Paul’s very blood.
그러나 쉽지 않았습니다. 비시디아 안디옥에서는 온 성이 주의 말씀을 들으러 모였지만 곧 박해가 일어났습니다. 이고니온에서는 유대인과 헬라인이 믿었지만 반대 세력 때문에 쫓겨나야 했습니다. 루스드라에서는 바울이 나면서부터 못 걷던 자를 고치자 사람들이 그를 신으로 숭배하려 했습니다. 그러나 며칠 지나지 않아, 원수들에게 선동된 무리들이 바울을 돌로 쳐서 거의 죽은 줄 알고 성 밖에 버려두었습니다. 더베에서는 많은 이들이 믿음을 갖게 되었습니다. 바로 이렇게 갈라디아 교회들이 세워졌습니다. 고난과 기적, 그리고 바울의 피를 통해서 말입니다.
Now only a short time later, Paul hears devastating news. False teachers, called Judaizers, had arrived. They were teaching that faith in Jesus Christ was not enough for salvation. Gentile believers, they said, must also obey the Jewish law circumcision, food regulations, religious festivals. They were preaching “Christ plus law.” But Paul saw clearly: Christ plus anything is no gospel at all.
그런데 이제 얼마 지나지 않아, 바울은 충격적인 소식을 듣게 됩니다. 유대주의자라 불리는 거짓 교사들이 들어와서 예수 그리스도를 믿는 것만으로는 구원이 충분하지 않다고 가르친 것입니다. 이방인 신자들은 유대 율법도 지켜야 한다고, 곧 할례와 음식 규례, 절기들을 지켜야 한다고 주장했습니다. 그들은 “그리스도 + 율법”을 전한 것입니다. 그러나 바울은 분명히 보았습니다. 그리스도에 무엇인가를 더하면 그것은 복음이 전혀 아니라는 것을.
That is why Paul explodes at the very beginning of his letter: “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel which is really no gospel at all.” Paul is shocked because these believers had seen the power of grace. They had watched miracles. They had seen Paul nearly die for the gospel. And yet, they were deserting Christ for something else.
그래서 바울은 편지 서두부터 폭발하듯 외칩니다. “그리스도의 은혜로 너희를 부르신 이를 이같이 속히 떠나 다른 복음을 따르는 것을 내가 이상히 여기노라. 다른 복음은 없나니.” 바울은 충격을 받았습니다. 왜냐하면 이 성도들은 이미 은혜의 능력을 경험했고, 기적을 보았으며, 바울이 복음을 위해 죽음 직전까지 갔던 것도 직접 보았기 때문입니다. 그런데도 그들은 그리스도를 버리고 다른 것을 쫓고 있었던 것입니다.
Paul calls out this “other gospel” the message that mixes Jesus with human effort, the cross with human merit, grace with law. He declares twice: “If anyone preaches another gospel, let him be accursed.” Why so strong? Because another gospel cannot save. A counterfeit gospel leaves people lost.
바울은 이 “다른 복음”을 정면으로 지적합니다. 예수님과 인간의 노력을 섞고, 십자가와 인간의 공로를 섞으며, 은혜와 율법을 섞는 메시지입니다. 그는 두 번이나 선언합니다. “다른 복음을 전하면 저주를 받을지어다.” 왜 이렇게 강하게 말했을까요? 다른 복음은 사람을 구원하지 못하기 때문입니다. 가짜 복음은 사람을 잃어버리게 만듭니다.
Then Paul asks: “Am I seeking the approval of men, or of God? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.” This is the heart of his ministry. Paul was not trying to make the message easier to swallow. He was not seeking popularity. He was a servant of Christ, bound to truth.
그리고 바울은 묻습니다. “이제 내가 사람들에게 좋게 하랴, 하나님께 좋게 하랴? 내가 지금까지 사람의 기쁨을 구하였다면 그리스도의 종이 아니니라.” 이것이 그의 사역의 중심이었습니다. 바울은 메시지를 듣기 쉽게 만들려 하지 않았습니다. 인기를 좇지도 않았습니다. 그는 그리스도의 종으로 진리에 매인 자였습니다.
And Paul reminds them: the gospel he preached was not man’s invention. He did not learn it in a school or receive it from the apostles. It came to him by revelation from Jesus Christ. Once he was a persecutor, zealous for Jewish tradition, advancing beyond many of his peers. But God revealed His Son to him, and the persecutor became a preacher. This transformation was proof that the gospel is real and divine.
또 바울은 그가 전한 복음이 사람의 작품이 아님을 상기시킵니다. 그는 그것을 학교에서 배운 것도, 사도들에게서 전달받은 것도 아니었습니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도의 계시로 온 것이었습니다. 그는 한때 교회를 핍박하는 자였고, 유대 전통에 대해 누구보다 열심히 있었으며, 동료들보다 앞서가던 사람이었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 그에게 아들을 나타내셨고, 그 핍박자가 이제는 복음을 전하는 자가 된 것입니다. 이 변화 자체가 복음이 참되고 하나님의 것임을 증거하는 것이었습니다.
So why was Paul astonished? Because after such a powerful beginning, after such costly planting, the Galatians were deserting grace for law, freedom for bondage, Christ for rituals. His astonishment was not just theological it was pastoral, like a father heartbroken that his children were running back into chains after being set free.
그러므로 왜 바울이 놀랐는지 알 수 있습니다. 그렇게 능력 있는 시작 후에, 그렇게 큰 대가를 치르고 심겨진 후에, 갈라디아인들이 은혜를 버리고 율법을 선택하며, 자유를 버리고 종살이를 택하고, 그리스도를 버리고 의식을 붙들고 있었던 것입니다. 그의 놀람은 단순한 신학적 충격이 아니었습니다. 목자의 심정이었습니다. 자유케 된 자녀들이 다시 사슬에 묶여 돌아가는 것을 보는 아버지의 마음이었습니다.
The same danger remains for us. The “other gospels” of our day may not be circumcision or food laws, but they are just as dangerous:
오늘 우리에게도 같은 위험이 있습니다. 우리의 시대의 “다른 복음”은 할례나 음식 규례가 아닐지라도 똑같이 위험합니다.
A gospel of prosperity: Christ plus wealth.
번영의 복음: 그리스도 + 재물
A gospel of self-help: Christ plus your own effort.
자기계발의 복음: 그리스도 + 나의 노력
A gospel of tolerance: Christ plus compromise with sin.
관용의 복음: 그리스도 + 죄와의 타협
But Paul’s cry rings true: “There is no other gospel!” Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
그러나 바울의 외침은 지금도 울려 퍼집니다. “다른 복음은 없다!” 구원은 오직 은혜로, 믿음으로, 그리스도 안에서만 이루어집니다.
