Blessed From Death to Life

Grace and peace to you, beloved, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Today we gather as a grateful family, redeemed by grace and upheld by mercy. We did not arrive in this sanctuary by our own strength, nor do we stand here because we are wise or deserving. We are here because grace pursued us when we could not move toward God, mercy interrupted our destruction, and the love of God lifted us from death into life.
하나님 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 여러분에게 있기를 바랍니다.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, our gratitude begins not at the table, but at the cross. Before we thank Him for breath in our lungs, we thank Him for life in our spirit. Before we celebrate earthly blessing, we bow in awe that once we were dead, but God made us alive in Christ.

Paul reminds us with sobering clarity: “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” (Eph. 2:1). We were not merely injured or confused we were spiritually dead. A lifeless soul cannot reach upward. Sin did not simply weaken; it buried us.
바울은 우리에게 분명히 말합니다.“너희의 허물과 죄로 죽었던 너희를 살리셨도다.” (엡 2:1) 우리는 단지 상처 입은 존재나 방황하는 자가 아니었습니다. 우리는 영적으로 완전히 죽어 있었습니다. 죽은 영혼은 스스로 하나님을 향해 손을 뻗을 수 없습니다. 죄는 단순히 우리를 약하게 한 것이 아니라 우리를 무덤에 묻었습니다.
Yet into that hopelessness, Scripture brings hope: “But God, being rich in mercy…” (v. 4). Every testimony begins with those two words. We were dead but God made us alive. We were lost but God sought us. We did not climb our way to grace; grace descended into the darkness and raised us by the power of Christ.
그러나 그 절망 속에 복음은 소망을 전합니다. “긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님이…” (v.4)
모든 간증은 이 두 단어로 시작됩니다. “그러나 하나님께서!” 우리는 죽었으나 하나님께서 살리셨습니다. 우리는 길을 잃었으나 하나님께서 찾아오셨습니다. 우리가 은혜로 올라간 것이 아니라, 은혜가 어둠 속으로 내려오셔서 우리를 일으키셨습니다.
“It is by grace you have been saved.” (v. 5). Salvation is not earned by effort, character, or faithfulness, it is received by mercy alone. We brought sin; God brought salvation. We brought guilt; God brought forgiveness. We brought death, but God brought resurrection life. “너희는 은혜로 구원을 받은 것이라.” (v.5) 구원은 우리의 노력이나 성품, 신실함으로 얻은 것이 아닙니다. 오직 하나님의 긍휼로 받은 선물입니다. 우리가 가져온 것은 죄였고,
하나님이 주신 것은 구원이었습니다. 우리가 가져온 것은 죄책감이었고, 하나님이 주신 것은 용서였습니다. 우리가 가져온 것은 죽음이었지만, 하나님은 부활의 생명을 주셨습니다.
And grace did not stop at forgiveness grace lifted us. Paul writes that God “seated us with Christ in the heavenly realms” (v. 6). We do not strive to be accepted; we already belong. We do not fight for identity; in Christ it has been given.
그 은혜는 단지 용서로 멈추지 않았습니다. 은혜는 우리를 들어 올려 주셨습니다.
바울은 말합니다. “또 함께 일으키사 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉히시니.” (v.6)
우리는 하나님의 사랑을 얻기 위해 애쓰는 자가 아니라, 이미 그 사랑 안에 속한 자들입니다. 우리의 정체성은 쟁취하는 것이 아니라, 그리스도 안에서 이미 주어진 선물입니다.
And why did God save us? “That in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace.” (v. 7). Our salvation is not merely a moment it is the eternal display of God’s mercy. We are living evidence that grace triumphs.
하나님께서 우리를 구원하신 이유는 무엇일까요? “이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 자비하심으로써 그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을 오는 여러 세대에 나타내려 하심이라.” (v.7)
우리의 구원은 한순간의 사건이 아니라, 영원히 하나님의 은혜가 드러나는 증거입니다.
우리의 삶 자체가 “은혜가 승리했다”는 증거입니다.
Paul declares again so no pride survives: “It is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast.” (vv. 8–9). We trust not in our record but in Christ’s righteousness. We stand not on our merit but on His finished work. If God loved us when we were dead, how secure are we now that we live in Christ?
바울은 다시 강조합니다. “너희가 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았나니, 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요, 하나님의 선물이라. 행위에서 난 것이 아니니, 이는 누구든지 자랑하지 못하게 함이라.” (vv.8–9) 우리는 우리의 기록이 아니라 그리스도의 의를 신뢰합니다. 우리는 우리의 공로 위가 아니라, 그분의 완전한 십자가 위에 서 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리가 죽어 있을 때도 사랑하셨다면, 이제 그리스도 안에서 살아 있는 우리를 얼마나 더 안전하게 지키시겠습니까?
Finally, Paul gives purpose to grace: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” (v. 10). We are not accidents but God’s handiwork, formed for His glory. Grace not only rescues it renews and sends. We serve not to earn God’s love but because we already have it. Every breath is borrowed mercy; every morning is renewed grace.
마지막으로, 바울은 은혜의 목적을 이렇게 밝힙니다. “우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니.” (v.10) 우리는 우연히 태어난 존재가 아니라, 하나님의 작품입니다. 은혜는 우리를 구할 뿐 아니라, 새롭게 빚고, 세상으로 보내십니다. 우리가 섬기는 것은 하나님의 사랑을 얻기 위해서가 아니라, 이미 그 사랑을 받았기 때문입니다. 우리의 모든 숨은 빌려주신 긍휼이며, 모든 아침은 새로 주어진 은혜입니다.
So today we give thanks not first for food, but for forgiveness; not first for provision, but for salvation; not first for blessings in our hands, but for new life in our hearts. Once we were dead, but now in Christ we live.
그러므로 오늘 우리는 음식보다 용서에, 풍성함보다 구원에, 손의 복보다 마음의 새 생명에 먼저 감사드립니다. 한때 죽었던 우리가 이제는 그리스도 안에서 살게 되었기 때문입니다.
