1 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

2 The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.
3 You have enlarged the nation
    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
    as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
    you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor.
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
    and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
    will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given,
    and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
    from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

“The Light That Breaks Our Darkness”

Isaiah 9:1–7

Advent begins with a brutal honesty: there are places in every life where darkness has taken hold more deeply than we like to admit. Isaiah wrote to people who understood this darkness firsthand, those who endured lingering disappointment, guilt that haunted quiet moments, and fears that wrapped around their hearts like a slow, unyielding grip.
은혜와 평강이 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 능력 있는 이름으로 여러분에게 함께하길 바랍니다. 대림절(Advent)은 우리 삶 속에 존재하는 어둠을 솔직하게 인정하는 데서 시작됩니다. 우리 각자의 삶에는 말하지 못한 깊은 어둠이 자리 잡고 있습니다. 이사야는 이 어둠을 누구보다도 잘 아는 사람들에게 말씀을 전했습니다. 그들은 오래 지속된 실망, 조용한 순간마다 따라붙는 죄책감, 마음을 천천히 조여오는 두려움 속에 살고 있었습니다.

Their world felt heavy, unpredictable, and spiritually suffocating, yet it was precisely into this kind of world that God spoke His promise of light. When Isaiah declared that “the people walking in darkness have seen a great light,” he was not describing people having a rough day; he was addressing those who had forgotten what hope looked like. And this is where the Advent story becomes painfully personal: it shows us that God’s light does not wait for us to rise above our struggles. Instead, it enters the very places we try so hard to hide.

그들의 세상은 무겁고, 예측할 수 없고, 영적으로 숨 막힐 정도였습니다. 그런데 바로 그런 세상 속으로 하나님은 빛의 약속을 말씀하셨습니다. 이사야가 “흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 보게 될 것”이라고 선포했을 때, 그는 단지 힘든 하루를 보낸 사람들을 말한 것이 아니라, 희망이 무엇인지조차 잊어버린 이들을 향한 메시지였습니다. 그리고 바로 여기서 대림절 이야기는 깊이 개인적이 됩니다. 하나님의 빛은 우리가 스스로 어둠을 벗어나기를 기다리지 않습니다. 우리가 숨기려 애쓰는 그 자리로 직접 찾아오십니다.

Many of us have learned to operate in our own darkness. We go through daily routines carrying quiet burdens, anxiety that never fully releases, memories that still sting, relationships that feel beyond repair, and spiritual exhaustion that makes prayer seem distant or mechanical. We become skilled at managing shadows, even while insisting we’re fine. Advent interrupts this pattern. It gently, yet clearly, asks: Where have we become comfortable with the darkness? Where have we surrendered our hope that God can still intervene? Where have we let silence, fear, or discouragement settle in as if they have permanent rights over our lives?

많은 이들은 이미 자기만의 어둠 속에서 살아가는 법을 배웠습니다. 조용히 짊어진 짐, 완전히 사라지지 않는 불안, 여전히 아픈 기억, 회복될 수 없다고 느껴지는 관계, 기도조차 멀게 느껴지는 영적 피로를 안은 채 일상을 살아갑니다. 우리는 그 모든 그림자를 관리하며, 스스로 괜찮다고 말하는 데 익숙해졌습니다. 그러나 대림절은 이 패턴을 끊습니다. 부드럽지만 분명하게 묻습니다. 우리는 어디에서 어둠에 익숙해졌는가?
하나님이 개입할 수 있다는 희망을 어디에서 포기했는가? 침묵과 두려움과 낙심이 우리 삶의 일부가 되어버린 곳은 어디인가?

Isaiah tells us that God sees even the darkness we no longer acknowledge. He sees the emotional exhaustion hidden beneath practiced smiles, the disappointment that quiets our faith, and the mistakes we fear have rewritten our story beyond repair. But instead of turning away, God steps into the scene with a promise that surpasses human ability: He will multiply joy, break oppression, and lift the spiritual heaviness that has shaped us. The reference to “the day of Midian” reminds us that God delivers not through human brilliance or strength, but through His own surprising grace. Advent is not a season that asks us to try harder; it is a season that invites us to watch God do what we cannot do for ourselves.

이사야는 우리가 스스로 인정하지 않는 어둠까지도 하나님은 보고 계신다고 말합니다. 웃음 뒤에 숨겨진 피로, 우리의 믿음을 조용히 무너뜨리는 실망, 돌이킬 수 없다고 여기는 실수까지도 주님은 보십니다. 그러나 하나님은 외면하지 않으십니다. 인간의 능력을 넘어서는 약속과 기쁨을 더하시고, 억압을 깨뜨리시고, 영적인 무거움에서 우리를 들어 올리신다는 약속과 함께 찾아오십니다. “미디안의 날”에 대한 언급은 하나님의 구원이 인간의 전략이나 능력으로 이루어지지 않고, 전혀 예상치 못한 은혜로 이루어진다는 것을 보여줍니다. 대림절은 우리가 더 열심히 노력하라는 계절이 아니라, 우리가 할 수 없는 일을 하나님이 이루시는 것을 보도록 초대하는 계절입니다.

At the center of this promise stands a Child fragile in appearance yet carrying the full weight of heaven’s authority. God’s response to centuries of darkness is not an army or a strategy but a Person. Christ enters our world not from a distance but from within it, carrying every fear, wound, regret, and part of our story that feels too complicated for us to untangle on His shoulders. Isaiah’s four titles reveal what this Child offers. As the Wonderful Counselor, He brings wisdom to confusion. As Mighty God, He supplies strength to weakness. As Everlasting Father, He provides compassionate presence in loneliness. As Prince of Peace, He brings a wholeness that calms the restless heart and restores what is broken within us.

이 약속의 중심에는 연약해 보이지만 하늘의 모든 권세를 지닌 한 아기가 서 있습니다. 하나님은 어둠 속에 가득했던 세월에 대한 응답으로 군대를 보내지 않으시고, 한 사람을 보내셨습니다. 그리스도는 멀리서 세상에 오신 것이 아니라 그 안으로 들어오셨습니다. 우리의 두려움, 상처, 후회, 복잡한 이야기들을 모두 품고 오셨습니다.
이사야가 말한 네 가지 이름은 이 아이가 우리에게 주시는 은혜를 보여줍니다.
놀라우신 모사로서 혼란 속에 지혜를 주시는 분
전능하신 하나님으로서 약함 속에 힘을 주시는 분
영존하시는 아버지로서 외로움 속에 함께하시는 분
평강의 왕으로써 마음의 불안을 잠잠케 하고, 무너진 부분을 회복시키시는 분

Advent, then, becomes both comforting and challenging. It comforts us with the truth that Christ enters our darkness with unwavering love, but it challenges us with the reality that we often cling to the very shadows we need Him to dispel. We hold onto guilt because we believe we deserve it. We carry burdens alone because we fear disappointing God. We numb our pain rather than bring it into His light. Yet Christ comes not to shame us but to set us free from what we were never meant to carry. His light does not merely illuminate our darkness; it transforms it.

그래서 대림절은 우리를 위로하는 동시에 도전합니다. 그리스도는 변함없는 사랑으로 우리의 어둠 속에 들어오시지만, 우리는 종종 그 어둠을 붙들고 있습니다. 죄책감을 당연히 여겨 내려놓지 못하고, 하나님을 실망시킬까 두려워 짐을 홀로 지고, 아픔을麻지시키며 주님의 빛 앞에 드러내지 않으려 합니다. 그러나 그리스도는 우리를 부끄럽게 하려고 오신 것이 아니라, 우리가 결코 감당하도록 만들어지지 않은 무거운 짐에서 우리를 자유롭게 하러 오셨습니다. 그분의 빛은 단지 어둠을 비추는 것이 아니라, 어둠을 변화시키는 빛입니다.

As we enter this Advent season, Isaiah calls us to stop pretending we are unhurt, untouched, or unaffected. Advent is the time to allow the light of Christ to reach the corners of our hearts that we have ignored. It invites us to believe that despair does not define us, that failure is not final, and that the heaviness we feel is not too thick for His presence to break through. The zeal of the Lord, the passionate, unstoppable love of God, makes this possible. It is not our strength but His joy, His commitment, and His desire to bring transformation.

대림절에 이사야는 우리에게 말합니다. 우리는 다치지 않은 척, 아무 일 없었던 것처럼, 흔들리지 않은 것처럼 살 필요가 없습니다. 대림절은 우리가 외면해온 마음의 구석구석에 그리스도의 빛이 닿도록 허락하는 시간입니다. 절망이 우리의 정체성이 아님을, 실패가 결코 끝이 아님을, 지금 느끼는 무거움이 그분의 임재 앞에서 결코 이길 수 없음을 믿도록 부르십니다. 이 모든 것은 하나님의 열정 포기하지 않는 사랑 때문에 가능합니다. 우리의 힘이 아니라, 그분의 기쁨과 헌신과 사랑이 우리를 변화시킵니다.

And so, we start Advent with a simple yet honest question: Will we allow the Light to reach us? Not the polished version of ourselves, but the real places where we hurt and struggle.

그래서 우리는 대림절을 이렇게 시작합니다. 빛이 우리에게 오도록 허락할 것인가?
겉으로 정돈된 모습이 아니라, 실제로 아파하고 흔들리고 지친 그 자리에?

Christ has already entered the world, and He continues to come into every place that welcomes Him. The darkness we carry is not stronger than the Savior who enters it. His coming is not symbolic; it is personal, powerful, and deeply intentional. He comes to break what binds us and to heal what time could never mend.

그리스도는 이미 세상에 오셨고, 지금도 그분을 맞아들이는 모든 곳에 찾아오십니다.
우리가 짊어진 어둠은 그분보다 강하지 않습니다.
그분의 오심은 상징이 아니라 실제이며, 강력하고, 매우 개인적입니다.
그분은 우리를 묶는 것을 끊고, 시간이 고칠 수 없는 상처까지도 치유하시기 위해 오셨습니다.

May this Advent season inspire us with renewed courage to confront our darkness, trusting that Christ is ready to meet us there. And may His light steady, gentle, and victorious break through every shadow until our hearts learn to hope once more.

이 대림절이 우리의 용기를 새롭게 하여, 우리 안의 어둠을 직면하도록 돕고,
그 어둠 한가운데서 우리를 만나시는 그리스도를 신뢰하게 되기를 바랍니다.
그리고 그분의 빛이 온유하게, 그러나 반드시 승리하며 우리 마음의 모든 그림자를 하나씩 몰아내어 다시 희망을 배우게 하기를 소망합니다.
