14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[A] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge —that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
FOR THIS REASON, WE KNEEL
Ephesians 3:14–21
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Today, I would like to invite you into one of the most intimate and profound passages in the New Testament a passage where the apostle Paul, imprisoned and largely forgotten by the world, leads us into the deepest currents of the Christian life. Ephesians 3:14 -21 is not a declaration shouted from a platform; it is a prayer whispered from a cold prison floor.
하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 오는 은혜와 평강이 여러분에게 있기를 바랍니다. 오늘 저는 여러분을 신약성경 가운데 가장 깊고 친밀한 한 본문으로 초대하고자 합니다. 사도 바울이 세상으로부터 잊혀진 채 감옥에 갇혀 있으면서, 그리스도인의 삶의 심연으로 우리를 인도하는 기도입니다. 에베소서 3장 14절부터 21절까지—이 말씀은 높은 강단에서 외쳐진 선언이 아니라, 차가운 감옥 바닥에서 속삭인 기도입니다.
It is the kind of Scripture that reads like a trembling heartbeat full of surrender, complete with longing, full of a love that is too wide and too deep for human words. And yet Paul tries to put it into words because he knows that until the church, the ‘kneeling generation’, kneels again, it will never truly rise again.
이 구절은 떨리는 심장의 고동처럼 읽힙니다. 온전한 헌신과 갈망으로 가득하며, 인간의 언어로는 다 담을 수 없는 깊고 넓은 사랑으로 흘러넘칩니다. 그러나 바울은 그 사랑을 끝까지 표현하려 애씁니다. 왜냐하면 “무릎 꿇는 세대”가 다시 무릎을 꿇지 않는다면, 교회는 결코 다시 일어설 수 없다는 것을 알기 때문입니다.
Paul begins with a posture that the modern world despises but heaven honors: he kneels. He says, “For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.” Paul, the apostle to the nations, does not stand tall in confidence or speak from human authority; he bows in humility before the One who names every tribe, every soul, every generation.
바울은 세상이 멸시하지만 하늘이 존귀히 여기는 자세로 시작합니다. 그는 “이러므로 내가 하늘과 땅에 있는 각 족속에게 이름을 주신 아버지 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 비노니”라고 말합니다. (엡 3:14–15) 민족들의 사도였던 바울은 자신감으로 우뚝 서지 않았고, 인간의 권위로 말하지 않았습니다. 그는 모든 세대와 모든 영혼의 이름을 지으신 하나님 앞에 겸손히 엎드립니다
In a world driven by pride, speed, and self-promotion, Paul reminds us that actual spiritual authority is not born on platforms, but on floors, not in applause, but in surrender, not in strength, but in the place where pride dies and God begins. When a believer kneels, heaven takes notice. When a church kneels, the atmosphere changes. When a generation kneels, revival begins to breathe. Kneeling in this context is not just a physical act, but a spiritual posture of humility, surrender, and prayer.
오늘날의 세상은 교만, 속도, 자기 과시로 움직입니다. 그러나 바울은 진정한 영적 권위는 무대 위가 아니라 바닥에서, 박수 속이 아니라 포기 속에서, 힘이 아닌 겸손 속에서 시작된다는 것을 보여줍니다. 성도가 무릎 꿇을 때, 하늘이 주목합니다. 교회가 무릎 꿇을 때, 공기가 바뀝니다. 세대가 무릎 꿇을 때, 부흥이 숨 쉬기 시작합니다.
여기서 말하는 ‘무릎 꿇음’은 단순한 신체의 동작이 아니라, 영적 태도, 곧 겸손과 헌신, 기도의 자세입니다.
From this kneeling place, Paul offers a prayer that is so profound it still resonates with the core of the church today. He does not ask for freedom from prison, relief from suffering, or a change in circumstances. He asks for something far greater, something deeper, something eternal. He prays that God would strengthen us “in the inner being through His Spirit.”
이 무릎 꿇은 자리에서 바울은 놀라운 기도를 드립니다. 그는 감옥에서 벗어나게 해 달라고, 고통을 덜어 달라고, 환경이 바뀌게 해 달라고 기도하지 않습니다.
그보다 훨씬 더 크고 깊고 영원한 것을 구합니다.

Paul knows that the most significant battles are fought long before anyone sees them, that the actual earthquakes of life begin inside the soul, and that if God fortifies the inner man, no outer prison can destroy him.
바울은 진정한 싸움이 겉에서 보이기 전에 속에서 먼저 일어난다는 것을 압니다.
삶의 진동은 영혼의 깊은 곳에서 시작됩니다. 하나님께서 속사람을 세우시면, 어떤 감옥도 그를 무너뜨릴 수 없습니다.
The Spirit gives strength—not the strength to avoid trials, but the strength to endure them without breaking; not the strength to escape pressure, but the strength to stand under it without collapsing. This inner strength cannot be purchased, performed, or pretended. It is given by the Spirit to those who kneel.
성령께서 주시는 힘은 고난을 피하는 힘이 아니라, 부서지지 않고 견디는 힘입니다.
압박을 제거하는 힘이 아니라, 그 아래서도 주저앉지 않게 하는 힘입니다.
이 속사람의 힘은 인간이 살 수 없고, 연기할 수도 없습니다.
무릎 꿇은 자들에게 성령께서 주시는 선물입니다.
Yet this prayer goes even deeper. Paul asks that Christ would “dwell in our hearts through faith,” not as a guest who visits occasionally, but as the Lord who takes up permanent residence. This is a transformative dwelling, not a passive one. Many believers allow Jesus into their lives like a visitor, preparing a room for Him on Sundays, inviting Him in during worship, and then asking Him to leave when comfort, pride, or distraction return.
그러나 바울의 기도는 더 깊이 들어갑니다. 그는 “믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도께서 너희 마음에 계시게 하시옵고” (엡 3:17) 라고 기도합니다. 예수님께서 잠시 들렀다 가는 손님이 아니라, 영원히 거하시는 주인으로 머무시기를 구하는 것입니다. 많은 신자들이 예수님을 손님처럼 맞이합니다. 주일에는 방을 정리하고, 예배 때만 잠시 문을 열어 드립니다.
그러다가 편안함, 자존심, 세상의 분주함이 돌아오면 그분을 다시 문밖으로 내보냅니다.
But Paul is praying for a Christianity that is not built on moments but on habitation, not on visitations but on dwelling. When Christ dwells, He does not sit silently in the corner of the heart; He renovates. He rearranges. He heals old wounds, pulls up old roots, and fills the dark rooms of the soul with new light. He becomes the center of the home, bringing hope and inspiration to our lives.
그러나 바울의 기도는 방문이 아니라 거주, 순간이 아니라 거함입니다.
그리스도께서 마음에 거하신다면, 그분은 조용히 한쪽 구석에 앉아 계시지 않습니다.

From this indwelling Christ comes a rooting in love. Paul writes that we may be “rooted and grounded in love.” This love is not an emotion we feel when life is good. It is the foundation that holds us when life is hard. It is the soil where faith grows, the anchor that steadies us in storms, and the strength that remains when every other strength fails.
그리스도께서 거하실 때, 우리는 사랑에 뿌리를 내리게 됩니다. 바울은 말합니다. “사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서.” (엡 3:17) 이 사랑은 상황이 좋을 때 느끼는 감정이 아닙니다. 삶이 무너질 때 우리를 붙잡는 기초이며, 믿음이 자라는 토양이며, 폭풍 속에서도 흔들리지 않게 하는 닻입니다.
When we are rooted in love, we are not controlled by fear, not defined by failure, and not shaken by criticism. Instead, we stand firm, held by the very love that hung on a cross, rose from a grave, and now fills the universe. This love provides comfort and reassurance during life’s challenges.
사랑에 뿌리내린 사람은 두려움에 휘둘리지 않고, 실패에 정의되지 않으며, 비판에 흔들리지 않습니다. 그를 붙드는 사랑은 바로 십자가에 달리시고, 무덤에서 일어나시고, 지금도 온 우주를 채우신 사랑이기 때문입니다.
Then, as if carried by a rising wave of the Spirit, Paul pulls us into the immeasurable dimensions of God’s love. He prays that we may grasp “how wide and long and high and deep” the love of Christ truly is, a love so vast it cannot be fully understood, only surrendered to.
이제 바울은 성령의 물결에 이끌리듯 하나님의 사랑의 차원을 선포합니다.
“너희가 능히 모든 성도와 함께 지식에 넘치는 그리스도의 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠함을 깨달아.” (엡 3:18–19)
The love of Christ stretches wide enough to welcome every sinner, long enough to outlast every season, high enough to lift the broken from the lowest places, and deep enough to reach into the hidden corners of our pain.
그리스도의 사랑은 죄인을 품기엔 충분히 넓고, 모든 세월을 견디기에 충분히 길며,
가장 낮은 곳의 상처를 들어 올리기에 충분히 높고, 우리의 숨은 고통까지 닿기에 충분히 깊습니다.
This love goes where shame tries to hide, where fear tries to silence, where wounds try to control. It surpasses knowledge not because it is illogical, but because it is too holy, too immense, too eternal for the limits of the human mind. It inspires awe and wonders in us.
이 사랑은 수치가 숨는 곳, 두려움이 속삭이는 곳, 상처가 우리를 묶는 곳까지 찾아갑니다.
그 사랑은 인간의 지식을 초월합니다. 비이성적이어서가 아니라, 거룩하고 무한하며, 영원하기 때문입니다.
And then Paul arrives at what may be the most astonishing line of all: that we “may be filled with all the fullness of God.” What a mystery that frail human beings, bruised by life and limited by flesh, could be filled with the fullness of the God who created galaxies, commands angels, and reigns forever. And yet Paul prays it boldly, because he knows that the grace of God does not just save us; it fills us.

The presence of God does not just surround us; it saturates us. The Spirit of God does not just visit us; He inhabits us. We are not called to half a life or half a faith; we are called to overflow with glory.
하나님의 은혜는 단지 우리를 구원하는 데 그치지 않습니다. 그분의 임재는 우리를 둘러싸는 데 그치지 않습니다. 그분의 영은 우리 안에 거하시며, 우리를 가득 채우십니다.

And as Paul is swept to the heights of this vision, he erupts into a doxology, a cry of worship that has echoed through centuries: “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us…”
이제 바울은 감격에 휩싸여 찬양으로 폭발합니다. “이제 우리 가운데서 역사하시는 능력대로 우리가 구하거나 생각하는 모든 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실 이에게.” (엡 3:20)
God’s power is not distant. It is not waiting in the sky. It is at work within us. Revival is not something we hope for someday; it is something God ignites inside the heart that kneels today. The immeasurably more of God begins in the place of surrender. The power of God is unlocked in the posture of humility. The future of a church, a home, a student, a nation begins in a kneeling generation.
하나님의 능력은 멀리 있지 않습니다. 하늘 어딘가에서 기다리는 것이 아닙니다.
그분의 능력은 지금, 우리 안에서 역사하고 있습니다. 부흥은 언젠가 올 어떤 사건이 아니라, 오늘 무릎 꿇는 심령 안에서 시작되는 불꽃입니다. 하나님의 “더 넘치도록 하시는 역사”는 항복의 자리, 겸손의 자세에서 시작됩니다. 교회의 미래, 가정의 미래, 학생의 미래, 민족의 미래는 무릎 꿇는 세대에서 시작됩니다.
And so, this passage, which began on Paul’s knees, ends on ours. For this reason, we kneel. We kneel because we have reached the end of ourselves. We kneel because we need strength that no human can give. We kneel because we want Christ to dwell within us, not just visit. We kneel because we long to be rooted again in love. We kneel because we can no longer live half-filled. We kneel because the God of immeasurably more is calling us deeper than knowledge, deeper than comfort, deeper than routine, deeper than fear. For this reason, in this generation, in this church, in this moment, we kneel.
그리고 마침내, 바울이 무릎을 꿇으며 시작한 이 말씀은 우리 또한 무릎 꿇게 만듭니다. 그러므로, 우리는 무릎 꿇습니다. 우리가 스스로의 끝에 이르렀기 때문에. 사람이 줄 수 없는 힘이 필요하기 때문에. 그리스도께서 손님이 아니라 주인으로 거하시길 원하기 때문에. 사랑의 뿌리에 다시 내려지기를 바라기 때문에. 더 이상 반쯤 찬 상태로 살 수 없기 때문에. 무릎 꿇습니다. “더 넘치도록 하시는 하나님”이 지식보다, 편안함보다, 습관보다, 두려움보다 더 깊은 곳으로 우리를 부르시기 때문입니다.
