6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[C]
7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”[D] 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”[E] 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”[F] 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”[G] 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”[H] 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
15 Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,”[I] meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.
The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

We began this journey through Galatians with Paul’s thunder: “No Other Gospel.” There is only one message that saves. We then stepped into the heart of that message with “Justified by Faith Alone,” where Paul declared that righteousness is not earned by the works of the law but received through trust in Christ. Now, as we enter chapter three, Paul takes us one step higher with the timeless cry: “The righteous shall live by faith.” This is not only how we enter salvation; it is how we walk, how we endure, how we live every single day in the covenant blessing of God.
우리는 갈라디아서 여정을 바울의 우렁찬 외침, “다른 복음은 없다”라는 선언으로 시작했습니다. 우리를 구원하는 메시지는 오직 하나뿐입니다. 이어서 “오직 믿음으로 의롭다 함을 받는다”라는 말씀을 통해, 율법의 행위로는 의를 얻을 수 없고 오직 그리스도를 신뢰함으로써 의롭다 함을 받는다는 복음의 핵심으로 들어갔습니다. 이제 3장에 들어서면서, 바울은 우리를 한 단계 더 높이 이끄며 시대를 초월한 외침을 전합니다. “의인은 믿음으로 말미암아 살리라.” 이것은 단지 우리가 구원에 들어가는 방식일 뿐 아니라, 우리가 걸어가고, 견디며, 매일매일 하나님의 언약의 복 가운데 살아가는 방식입니다.
Paul draws our attention back to Abraham, the father of faith. Scripture says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Long before the law was given, Abraham stood righteous before God simply because he trusted the promise. He had no commandments carved in stone, no rituals to perform, no systems to prove himself. He had only the Word of God, and he believed it.
바울은 우리의 시선을 믿음의 조상 아브라함에게로 돌립니다. 성경은 이렇게 말합니다. “아브라함이 하나님을 믿으니 이것을 그에게 의로 여기셨다.” 율법이 주어지기 오래 전, 아브라함은 단지 하나님의 약속을 신뢰했기 때문에 하나님 앞에 의롭다 함을 받았습니다. 그에게는 돌판에 새겨진 계명도, 수행해야 할 의식도, 자신을 증명할 제도도 없었습니다. 오직 하나님의 말씀만 있었고, 그는 그것을 믿었습니다.
That faith was enough, because faith rests not on itself but on the faithfulness of the God who speaks. In that moment Abraham became not just a patriarch of Israel but the model of all who believe. Paul insists, “It is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.” And so we, who believe in Christ, stand in that same line of blessing.
그 믿음은 충분했습니다. 왜냐하면 믿음은 자기 자신에 기대는 것이 아니라 말씀하시는 하나님의 신실하심에 기대기 때문입니다. 그 순간 아브라함은 단순히 이스라엘의 조상이 아니라 믿는 자들의 본이 되었습니다. 바울은 단호히 말합니다. “믿음으로 사는 자들이 곧 아브라함의 자손이다.” 그러므로 우리가 그리스도를 믿을 때, 우리도 동일한 복의 줄에 서게 됩니다.
But what exactly did Abraham hear? He heard the Word the Logos. The same Word that existed before time, the Word that spoke creation into being in Genesis 1: “And God said, let there be light.” That Word of power became the Word of promise in Genesis 12: “In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Abraham did not see Christ yet, but he heard Him in promise form. He trusted the Word, though it had not yet taken flesh. And centuries later, John opens his gospel with this same revelation: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
아브라함은 아직 그리스도를 보지 못했지만, 약속 속에서 그분을 들었습니다. 말씀은 아직 육신이 되지 않았지만, 그는 그 말씀을 신뢰했습니다. 그리고 수세기 후, 요한은 복음을 이렇게 열었습니다. “태초에 말씀이 계시니라… 이 말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하시매.”
The very voice that called Abraham out of his homeland, the very promise that declared blessing to the nations, stood in human flesh as Jesus Christ. Abraham believed the promise; we behold the fulfillment. Abraham saw the shadow; we embrace the substance. He heard the gospel in advance; we receive the gospel in person. The righteous live by faith, and that faith always clings to Christ, the eternal Word.
아브라함을 본향에서 불러내신 그 음성, 열방에게 복을 약속하신 그 말씀이 바로 예수 그리스도 안에서 육신이 되어 오셨습니다. 아브라함은 약속을 믿었고, 우리는 그 성취를 바라봅니다. 아브라함은 그림자를 보았고, 우리는 실체를 붙듭니다. 그는 미리 복음을 들었고, 우리는 복음을 직접 받습니다. 의인은 믿음으로 살며, 그 믿음은 언제나 영원한 말씀 되신 그리스도를 붙듭니다.
But Paul does not let us stay comfortable. He warns: “All who rely on works of the law are under a curse.” Why? Because the law demands perfection. It is written: “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law.” The law is holy and just, but it was never given as a ladder to heaven. It was given as a mirror to reveal our sin. A mirror shows you the dirt on your face, but it cannot wash you clean.
그러나 바울은 우리를 편안하게만 두지 않습니다. 그는 경고합니다. “무릇 율법 행위에 속한 자들은 저주 아래 있다.” 이유가 뭘까요? 율법은 완전을 요구하기 때문입니다. 기록되기를 “율법책에 기록된 모든 것을 항상 행하지 아니하는 자는 저주 아래 있는 자라” 하였습니다. 율법은 거룩하고 의롭지만, 하늘에 오르는 사다리로 주어진 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 죄를 드러내는 거울로 주어진 것입니다. 거울은 얼굴의 더러움을 보여줄 수 있지만, 그것을 씻을 수는 없습니다.
The law says, “Do this and live.” The gospel says, “Believe, and you will live.” Without the law, grace would feel cheap. Without grace, the law would crush us. But together they lead us to the cross. The law exposes the curse, and grace brings the blessing.
율법은 “이것을 행하라 그리하면 살리라”라고 말합니다. 복음은 “믿으라 그리하면 살리라”라고 말합니다. 율법이 없다면 은혜는 값싸게 느껴질 것이고, 은혜가 없다면 율법은 우리를 짓누를 것입니다. 그러나 함께 있을 때, 그것들은 우리를 십자가로 이끕니다. 율법은 저주를 드러내고, 은혜는 복을 가져옵니다.
Here the gospel thunders with glory: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.” On the cross, Jesus bore what we could never carry. He hung under the judgment that belonged to us. Isaiah foresaw it when he said, “He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities.”
여기서 복음은 영광으로 울려 퍼집니다. “그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 저주를 받은 바 되사 율법의 저주에서 우리를 속량하셨다.” 십자가 위에서 예수님은 우리가 감당할 수 없는 것을 대신 지셨습니다. 우리에게 속한 심판을 친히 담당하셨습니다. 이사야는 이미 이것을 예언했습니다. “그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라.”
The Son of God, righteous and innocent, became the cursed One, so that the guilty and condemned could go free. Why did He do this? Paul answers: “So that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.” Christ took the curse so that we could live in the blessing. He was rejected so we could be accepted. He died so we could live. This is the exchange of the ages, the holy transaction of Calvary.
하나님의 아들이시며 의로우신 분이 저주받은 자가 되셔서, 죄 많고 정죄받은 우리가 자유케 되었습니다. 왜 그가 이 일을 하셨습니까? 바울은 답합니다. “이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 아브라함의 복이 이방인에게 미치게 하고 또 우리로 하여금 믿음으로 성령의 약속을 받게 하려 함이라.” 그리스도는 저주를 지셔서 우리가 복 안에 살도록 하셨습니다. 그가 버림받으심으로 우리가 받아들여지고, 그가 죽으심으로 우리가 살게 되었습니다. 이것이 바로 시대를 초월한 교환, 갈보리의 거룩한 거래입니다.
And Paul presses the point even further with covenant language: “Even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it once it has been ratified.” If this is true of human agreements, how much more of God’s own promise? The law, given four hundred and thirty years after Abraham, could not cancel the covenant of grace. The promise was sealed long before Sinai and stands unbroken in Christ.

Paul explains that the promise was not made to “offsprings” in the plural, but to one seed and that seed is Christ. This means the covenant blessing spoken to Abraham finds its fulfillment not in law, not in ritual, not in national identity, but in Jesus Himself. And if we belong to Christ, we belong to Abraham, and we inherit the promise
바울은 말합니다. 약속은 “여럿을 가리켜 그 후손들에게 하신 것이 아니요 오직 하나를 가리켜 네 후손이라 하셨으니 곧 그리스도라.” 이것은 아브라함에게 하신 언약의 복이 율법이나 의식이나 민족적 정체성 안에서 성취되는 것이 아니라, 오직 예수님 안에서 성취된다는 뜻입니다. 우리가 그리스도께 속했다면, 우리는 아브라함께 속한 자요, 약속의 유업을 함께 받는 자입니다..
So, what does this mean for us? It means we are called not only to be justified by faith but to live by faith. Too many believers still live as if they are under a curse, bound by invisible laws of performance, approval, and fear. They try to measure up, to prove themselves, to earn what has already been given.
그렇다면 이것이 우리에게 무엇을 의미합니까? 우리는 단지 믿음으로 의롭다 함을 받을 뿐 아니라, 믿음으로 살아야 한다는 부름을 받았습니다. 그러나 너무 많은 신자들이 여전히 저주 아래 있는 것처럼 살고 있습니다. 보이지 않는 율법, 성취해야 한다는 강박, 사람들의 인정과 두려움에 매여 살아갑니다. 이미 주어진 은혜를 얻기 위해 애쓰며 자신을 증명하려 합니다.
But the Word of God declares: “The righteous shall live by faith.” Not by striving, not by law, not by the approval of men, but by trust in Christ, who loved us and gave Himself for us. Faith is not only the doorway into the Christian life; it is the pathway we walk every day. Faith is not a moment we look back to; it is the breath by which we live in Christ.그러나 하나님의 말씀은 선언합니다. “의인은 믿음으로 말미암아 살리라.” 노력으로가 아니라, 율법으로가 아니라, 사람들의 인정을 얻음으로가 아니라, 우리를 사랑하시고 자신을 내어주신 그리스도를 신뢰함으로 삽니다. 믿음은 단지 그리스도인의 삶으로 들어가는 문이 아니라, 우리가 날마다 걸어가는 길입니다. 믿음은 과거의 어떤 순간을 추억하는 것이 아니라, 그리스도 안에서 매일 살아가는 호흡입니다.
Beloved, this is the gospel of Abraham, the gospel of Paul, the gospel of the church through the ages, and the gospel for us today. It is the good news that Christ took the curse so that we might receive the blessing. The covenant is secure, the promise cannot be broken, and the Spirit is given to us by faith. The righteous shall live by faith and that faith is ours today, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
사랑하는 여러분, 이것이 아브라함의 복음이요, 바울의 복음이요, 교회 역사를 통해 전해진 복음이며, 오늘 우리를 위한 복음입니다. 곧 그리스도께서 저주를 담당하심으로 우리가 복을 받게 되었다는 기쁜 소식입니다. 언약은 확고하고, 약속은 깨지지 않으며, 성령은 믿음을 통해 우리에게 주어집니다. 의인은 믿음으로 살리라. 그리고 그 믿음은 지금, 우리 주 예수 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 주어진 믿음입니다.
