Reflection

The Israelites had seen miracle after miracle, yet somewhere on the long road around Edom their patience ran out. They spoke against God and against Moses, complaining that the very provision God had given them was not good enough. It is a painfully familiar moment. We too can find ourselves grumbling about the journey when it feels longer or harder than we expected.

The consequence was severe — venomous snakes, death, and a people brought to their knees in honest confession. Yet what followed was not abandonment but rescue. God told Moses to raise a bronze snake on a pole, and anyone who had been bitten only needed to look at it and live. The cure required nothing more than a trusting glance toward what God had provided.

This passage invites us to examine where impatience and ingratitude have crept into our own hearts, and to return to the simple, humble act of looking to God. Centuries later, Jesus himself pointed back to this moment, saying he would be lifted up just as Moses lifted the snake. The same grace that met Israel in the wilderness meets us today — not because we deserve it, but because God is faithful to save all who turn and look to him.

When we are honest about our sin and look to what God has provided, we find that grace has been there all along.
