“God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him…” Hebrews 6:10

I visited the Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery, I was reminded that the story of the Gospel in Korea is written in the lives and sacrifices of those who came before us. These missionaries were not seeking fame or recognition. They lived simply, served faithfully, and gave themselves fully for Christ and for Korea. Their graves tell the story of love, obedience, and enduring faith. As I walked those grounds, one question stirred deeply in my heart:

“What legacy will we leave behind?”

Their devotion challenges us today. We, too, are called to live purposefully to serve, to give, and to love with the same Gospel fire that brought them here. Let us not only remember their faith, but walk in it. Truly, God loved Korea and He still does. May our generation be found just as faithful.

믿음의 선조들 사이를 걷다

“하나님이 불의치 아니하사 너희 행위와 그의 이름을 위하여 나타낸 사랑으로 이미 성도를 섬긴 것과 이제도 섬기는 것을 잊어버리지 아니하시느니라” 히브리서 6:10

양화진 외국인 선교사 묘원을 방문하면서 한국 복음의 역사가 우리보다 먼저 온 이들의 삶과 희생 속에 새겨져 있음을 깨달았습니다. 이 선교사님들은 명예나 인정을 추구하지 않았습니다. 그들은 소박하게 살았고, 신실하게 섬겼으며, 그리스도와 한국을 위해 자신을 온전히 바쳤습니다. 그들의 무덤은 사랑과 순종, 그리고 변함없는 믿음의 역사를 보여줍니다. 그 땅을 걸으며 제 마음속 깊은 곳에서 한 가지 질문이 떠올랐습니다.

“우리는 어떤 유산을 남길 것인가?”

그들의 헌신은 오늘날 우리에게 도전이 됩니다. 우리 또한 그들을 이곳으로 인도했던 복음의 불꽃으로 섬기고, 베풀고, 사랑하는 삶을 살도록 부르심을 받았습니다. 그들의 믿음을 기억할 뿐만 아니라, 그 믿음 안에서 걸어갑시다. 진실로 하나님은 한국을 사랑하셨고, 지금도 사랑하십니다. 우리 세대도 그들처럼 신실하게 살아가기를 바랍니다.

Anonymous Devotion, Eternal Echo – Visiting Yanghwajin Missionary Cemetery

Hello everyone! This weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Yanghwajin Missionary Cemetery as part of our church’s CEM (Christian Education Ministry) Seasonal Picnic program. It was not just a simple outing, but a deeply moving and special time that touched my heart, so I wanted to share this experience through this blog post.

Resting Place of Forgotten Heroes

Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery is the final resting place of many foreign missionaries who served in Korea from the late 19th to early 20th century. These were people who left their comfortable homelands and came to the unfamiliar land of Joseon, dedicating their entire lives to service.

Walking through the cemetery and looking at each gravestone, many thoughts came to mind. Some passed away in their twenties, others came with their families and ended their lives in this land. They were people who gave everything they had to spread the gospel and love their neighbors, often without recognition or glory, sometimes even facing persecution.

Devotion Highly Valued by God

The fact that South Korea today has achieved unprecedented development and stands proudly on the world stage is no coincidence. At the root of all this are the blood, sweat, and tears of these missionaries.

The talented individuals educated in schools they established became pillars of the nation. The gospel they preached became the spiritual foundation of this country. Countless lives were saved in hospitals they built, and their love became seeds of hope in this land.

God never forgot this anonymous devotion and valued it highly. Perhaps the result is the prosperous South Korea we enjoy today.

A Life We Should Follow

Walking through Yanghwajin Cemetery, the biggest question that came to mind was, “What kind of life am I living?”

Even if we cannot do great things like the missionaries did, couldn’t we at least follow their spirit? Couldn’t we live as evangelists who share God’s Word and love with the people we meet in our daily lives?

• Showing God’s love through honest and faithful work at our workplace
• Demonstrating the fragrance of Christ through sacrifice and service at home
• Extending care and helping hands to our neighbors
• Sharing pain and offering comfort to those in need

I realized that all these things are ways to carry on the spirit of the missionaries.

With a Grateful Heart

This visit to Yanghwajin was not just a simple tour, but a precious time to directly experience the passionate devotion shown by our predecessors in faith. I was deeply grateful for the fact that because of their dedication, we can freely worship today and share the gospel.

I want to thank the CEM ministry team who planned this meaningful program and everyone who participated with us.

I make a commitment to never forget the passionate zeal and spirit of devotion of the missionaries, and to live practicing God’s love wherever I am.

이름 없는 헌신, 영원한 울림 – 양화진 선교사 묘역을 다녀와서

안녕하세요! 이번 주말 우리 교회 CEM(Choongjung English Ministry)의 Seasonal Picnic 프로그램으로 양화진 선교사 묘역을 방문하게 되었습니다. 단순한 나들이가 아닌, 마음 깊이 울림을 주는 특별한 시간이었기에 이렇게 글로 남겨봅니다.

잊혀진 영웅들의 안식처

양화진 외국인 선교사 묘원에는 19세기 말부터 20세기 초까지 한국에서 활동한 많은 외국인 선교사들이 잠들어 있습니다. 이분들은 편안한 고국을 떠나 낯선 조선 땅에 와서 평생을 바쳐 헌신하신 분들입니다.

묘역을 걸으며 하나하나의 묘비를 보니, 참으로 많은 생각이 들었습니다. 어떤 분은 20대의 젊은 나이에, 어떤 분은 가족과 함께 이 땅에 와서 생을 마감하셨습니다. 이름도 빛도 없이, 때로는 핍박받으며 오직 복음을 전하고 이웃을 사랑하는 일에 자신의 모든 것을 바치신 분들이었습니다.

하나님이 높이 평가하신 헌신

오늘날 대한민국이 세계에서 유례를 찾기 힘든 발전을 이루고 세계 무대에서 당당히 서게 된 것은 결코 우연이 아닙니다. 이 모든 것의 뿌리에는 선교사님들의 피와 땀과 눈물이 있었습니다.

그분들이 세운 학교에서 교육받은 인재들이 나라의 기둥이 되었고, 그분들이 전한 복음이 이 나라의 정신적 토대가 되었습니다. 그분들이 건립한 병원에서 수많은 생명이 구원받았고, 그분들의 사랑이 이 땅에 희망의 씨앗이 되었습니다.

하나님께서는 이런 이름 없는 헌신을 결코 잊지 않으시고 높이 평가해 주셨습니다. 그 결과가 오늘날 우리가 누리고 있는 풍요로운 대한민국의 모습이 아닐까요?

우리가 본받아야 할 삶

양화진 묘역을 거닐며 가장 크게 느낀 것은 ‘과연 나는 어떤 삶을 살고 있는가?’라는 질문이었습니다.

선교사님들처럼 거창한 일을 할 수는 없어도, 그분들의 정신만은 본받을 수 있지 않을까요? 내가 있는 자리에서, 내가 만나는 사람들에게 하나님의 말씀과 사랑을 전하는 전도자의 삶을 살 수는 있지 않을까요?

• 직장에서 정직하고 성실한 모습으로 하나님의 사랑을 보여주는 것
• 가정에서 희생과 섬김으로 그리스도의 향기를 나타내는 것
• 이웃에게 관심과 도움의 손길을 내미는 것
• 어려운 이들과 함께 아파하고 위로하는 것

이 모든 것이 선교사님들의 정신을 이어가는 길이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

감사한 마음으로

이번 양화진 방문은 단순한 견학이 아닌, 신앙의 선배들이 보여준 뜨거운 열정을 직접 체험하는 귀한 시간이었습니다. 그분들의 헌신이 있었기에 오늘 우리가 자유롭게 예배할 수 있고, 복음을 전할 수 있다는 사실에 깊이 감사했습니다.

이런 의미 있는 프로그램을 기획해 주신 CEM 사역팀과 함께해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.

앞으로도 선교사님들의 뜨거운 열정과 헌신의 정신을 잊지 않고, 내가 있는 자리에서 하나님의 사랑을 실천하며 살아가겠다는 다짐을 해봅니다.
