The other side of anger
26th Mar. 2023
“Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” Jonathan asked his father.
But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David.
Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the month he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.
this is about the common sense and the knowledge for Bible readers and also for all of us yes if you see a book divided into two different books they will go first second first name and second Samuel First Corinthians second Corinthians most of them are like that um yeah thank you all the time for scripture reading [Music] the other side of anger uh we usually put coin instead of anger right yes when do we do that probably for making a decision or when we play some games like basketball games who goes first okay yeah we decide like that um so there we go we throw the coin yes
and yeah if you go either upside or downside um if you do that with a 100 one you will have generally Sunshine Lee’s face or the number if you do with the 500 one and you will have crane right yes crane with the Open Wings and yeah or on the other side you will see oh back on 500 one yeah yeah coins has the other side yes for sure and I think everything in this world has two different side um green light means you know like ready to go or good to go and red light means don’t get any closer here’s a knife here’s a knife okay this is a knife I try to bring the actual one but it might look scary to you or like you might think oh pastor Joe has gone crazy he’s bringing weapon now so yeah we had bread for kids CM service yes people didn’t finish it yeah I’m sad joke anyway so with this knife I mean if it was really sharp one you know let’s think about uh let’s think about doctor giving a surgery they will use the knife and is the knife good yes it’s the knife that saves people if you go to if you go to a sushi bar yes for a for a set of Omakase or foreign
which can just slice the Flesh in a very thin size but I want to have it in the thick size yes oh my gosh I want the fish so bad um the Sashimi knife is it a good knife yes two fish two fish no [Laughter] oh okay not to the fish but for its purpose like is it doing I think right yeah it will give wow okay this will give the happiness to the person who’s gonna have the food but what if a drunk per drunk person on the street is holding the knife now is that still a good knife
what if two people are fighting in the family and if one of the other is holding the knife is it gonna be good no oh yes um and I think anger is pretty much the same thing you know one single knife it could be it’s same sharp thing that can cut other substance or other materials but once it was good but on the other moment it was very harmful dangerous weapon yes in Christianity anger is considered a negative emotion that should be avoided or overcome rather than encouraged or embarrassed but in this case for today’s case I want to consider anger as something to be useful also something to be avoided but also something to be useful yes um I mean obviously from the many scriptures as you can see from here uh anger is something to you know keep away from like Psalms and Proverbs gives wisdom form for our daily life and the passage goes like this let’s try Psalm chapter 37 verse 8. refrain from anger and forsake Wrath fret not yourself it tends only to evil okay yes keep yourself away from anger and
that’s yeah let’s read it a full gifts for band to his Spirit but the wise men quietly holds it back so yes who keeps who keeps themselves angry yes who keeps himself in anger it obviously says a fool a stupid person does it it the Bible put it that way and yeah we don’t have to read the last verse whole verse but as he says all the time slow to speak slow to anger yes for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God Bible usually put it this way and yeah you know the scriptures from all of them above tell us to hold our tempers and be careful with it but is the anger only the emotion that we should keep away from just just for that yes or is it to be avoided what kind of approach can we have for it while looking at two angry figures with different directions and intentions from today’s story as we can see from Saul and Jonathan anger is a very complex emotion yeah they can have both positive and negative consequences depending on how it is expressed and managed this is because anger can lead to destructive behavior and can damage relationship both with others and with God so here’s the instance of anger being portrayed as adjust and necessary response the wrongdoing or Injustice
so yes
in today’s scripture we can see that Saul becomes angry with Jonathan for supporting David instead of Saul and he’s angry is expressed in a violent and destructive way he attempts to kill his own son with a spear last time he tried to kill David okay um still David is a son in the law she’s happy he’s not in the law he’s still a family but not the direct family you know like I don’t uh since Elder John you have three daughters and I don’t have daughter yet I have a 20-day 20-day old son so he’s I just have son only I don’t know the heart of Daddy’s who has daughters but any guys who approached my daughter they’re all scumbags you know my daughter my daughter yes I don’t know yeah but okay Saul and David was in the kind of relationship maybe but Jonathan was his own son and Saul tried to kill Jonathan also yes from today’s scripture the anger and the rage is just driving this person into the madness and violence in contrast if you look at Jonathan he’s also in Anger today yes but it is expressed in a more measured way and he confronts his father and defends David in this case we can see that anger is having the right direction and the right purpose at the same time then what’s the real difference between you know the anger of those two figures Saul and Jonathan as mentioned the key difference is the way it is expressed and managed salsanger is uncontrolled and destructive and leading him to lash out in a violent and dangerous way out of jealousy sounds anger grew up and ended up Saul being paranoid over David we can and the others and get angry for a moment yes I mean it’s not about cancer can’t but we can’t avoid getting angry um for young people you might think that you know grown-ups adults don’t get angry and yell at each other because you guys if you go to school you see your friends you stupid blah blah but adults don’t do that right we don’t do it in the face but we do it here or we do it when you guys are not watching us okay yeah we still do we are still the same human beings um
two Bible verses from the book of evasions yes put it this way can you read can you read chapter 4 verse 26 from book of applications be angry and do not sin do not let the sun go down on your anger so it doesn’t deny that we get angry it doesn’t deny that we get mad but it does say be angry you can be angry yes be angry but do not sin and do not let the sun go down on your anger what does that mean don’t keep your anger till tomorrow yes for today you can have a dispute or struggles or
yeah argument with the person but you can have before today but don’t keep it till tomorrow this is very important thing uh as I’m one of those who just has to you know have answered in a logical way all the time for most of the time so but the but the Bible verse you know Ephesians chapter 4 verse 26 goes like Put it Down Let It Go and if you’re angry tomorrow then yeah give it a shot again but don’t keep it yes
so far what we could see from Seoul is totally opposite from this way right his jealousy you know rose up it appeared yes but what did Saul do with that he let it grow he let it grow more and more and Here Lady tried to kill David eight times you know he could stop once but even without hesitating he just let it flow
look at your whole week and even for now if you’re still mad and angry to a certain person or anything happened during the week it’s time to let it go okay yeah why don’t we look around to our neighbors and tell the person you can let it go okay yeah to three person okay three different people let’s do that
I don’t know yes yes you can let it go too yes you can let it go too okay yes don’t keep it don’t keep it in your heart but please Let It Go Let It Go by lifting up to God okay we offer we tell God our appreciation and what we are thankful for all the time but if you’re angry just tell it to God my kids are driving me bad or my wife or my husband is driving me mad why did you give him or why did you give her God why did you do that yes and she will say you chose the person yeah that’s going to be censored but anyway just lift it up just pray that to God hey I have this matter I have this I have this issue that’s just driving me crazy God come help me out just be honest and tell it to God yes um that’s what we could see from South so far but Jonathan’s anger is again controlled and focused allowing him to you know confront his father and defend his friend without without leading to violence hmm and here’s the thing you know anger sometimes should be expressed you know in the right way so today’s conclusion would be get angry get mad for the right reason and right timing and see if the reason of the anger or if the cause of the anger or if the direction of the anger you know just see if it should go that way or if you should stop because I’m not here to tell be a good Christian be a nice person even if you’re angry just keep it down yes just calm down you know no matter if it is solved well or no matter if it is right or wrong just be quiet no I’m not talking about that I’m not recommending any of those to you today if you had to get angry show it burst it out yes if you have to do but in the right way but in the right way I mean we should be very careful about that who is we just we could see Jonathan being the right figure you know who was angry about the Injustice of Saul trying to kill David you know having that attempt
who’s the other figure that we can take a look that’s Jesus yes from Gospel of John chapter 2 verse 13 through 16. and from Mark chapter 3 verse 1-6 if you’re very curious then open your Bible find out but you don’t have to for now
Jesus entered temple in John chapter 2 verse 13 to 16. and he found people selling animals and exchanging money over there and he got angry and he turned the tables upside down he’s saying get this out of here stop turning my father’s house into Market Jesus was definitely angry not only just flipping the tables upside down he had this weep you know he was whipping it around and what are you doing who do you think you are and what do you think this place is this is the house of the Lord that we worship what are you doing he just he blew out his anger yes people were using the temple you know which was supposed to be a place of worship but they were using for their own selfish purposes next week is the Palm Sunday and the next next week Sunday is
there come on people it’s time to say Happy Easter and exchange some eggs right uh-huh
Easter is the happiest day for the Christians yes only Christmas yeah uh-huh come on come on guys yes are we Christians is it a Muslim temple why are you guys like that Easter happy Easter okay yeah so during the during the passion week you know from Palm Sunday to Easter yes John Chapter 2 the case of cleansing the temple was happening around the time and Jesus showed this anger this is the house of God this is the place where we worship not for selling Mumbo jumbos stop doing the people and he just flipped it yes was it the right timing was was did it have the right purpose obviously yes if you see the same thing don’t flip the table but show your anger okay yeah another example that we can see is Mark chapter 3 verse 1 through verse 6. Jesus heals a man with a weird hand on the sabbatic day yes which was against the religious law of the time for the Pharisees and Pharisees who are present over there yes versus who are there yes were angry Jesus for breaking the law but again Jesus was also angry you know he was angry with them for their hypocrisy and lack of compassion for the sick person yes the law is the law that important is the law important than loving why did God set up the law it is for protecting them and it is for loving them then it should be used in the right way and if you’re not using that for that purpose if you’re using the law for just just having just having yourself on a higher position or you know in a better position a hierarchy or just have some Authority no it is not the right way it’s not the purpose of the law and guys you need love
don’t even tell that you love the law when you’re not even loving each other yes and she just said in John chapter 15. my comment is this anybody remember this my comment is this love each other as I have loved you I asked you because I also forgot for a moment help me out okay next verse first 13 greater love has no one than this to lay down one’s life for one’s friend yes Jesus said
we should love we should love each other and especially even by giving up my priority even by giving up what I have or even to myself you should love but there was there wasn’t over there the love was the love wasn’t over there so Jesus got angry and he showed it I don’t care about what you guys think I don’t care about that law so let me just do my work he healed the Wither the hand person and then Jesus left like the mic drop
what is our goal of living as a Christian of course it is to promote love peace and Justice in the world if anger can be channeled in a way that supports these goals support these qualities then it can be a just and necessary emotion instead of something to be kept away and avoided all the time we shouldn’t be afraid of you know expressing anger when necessary
and we must always do it in a way that is consistent with the with our values that we can find from the scripture and as you could see the value of loving our friend the value of loving each other because that’s God’s will love your neighbors as yourself and love the god with all your soul with all your heart and or your might that is the two biggest comment that I give you it’s from Deuteronomy chapter 16. yes verse four and five take a look later
when does our anger burst out when do we get angry
in a big size in a you know you know first level size of thinking I hope you get angry when you see the news in Ukraine oh that’s something happening over there I hope you get angry last Friday
Pastor Lisa yes Isaac came to our Friday prayer service community and he shared his stories about North Korean regime persecuting and oppressing the people of North Korean Christians he didn’t share much of the story on the Friday but he even had to eat the dung in a in a fruit in a yeah freezing tank he was tortured by North Korean government by by getting cut from delivering the Bible he was beaten mocked burnt Frozen
be angry when you hear that be sad and be angry has some heart um
and in the beginning when I was taking lectures from Chongqing University and starting to study theology as a presbyterian I considered you know having the good faith is having the word you know in the right way yes and it is more about Logics and making understanding from here but as a Time Goes By if it makes sense here it does come to here and if you’re understood and if you receive the word and if nothing inside here is moving then it means you didn’t understand the word quite yet
today’s scripture tells us that anger yes it talks about the quality of anger but also it talks about the reason why the person gets angry and the way of that person is pressing that out
today after the service we’re gonna reach out to some Pastors in Project yes [Music] for dealing with people from third world countries yes and to see if there’s any way that we can help them out there are lots of illegal workers yes who came who’s still having a hard time who is maltreated and also people outside of Korea who cannot even hear the gospel or even if they do they have hard time to find the right path of believing in Jesus having the right Community they need a lot of support and we’re gonna we’re gonna go and find out and somehow it started because some members here had the heart to go out you Orthopedic for them but also at the same time it was a sort of anger too why are we sitting down in this nice worship Hall with all these AC lights sound system projector the whole nice building building you know just worshiping God with all this all this equipped we are doing it here but why the same environment or why anything’s close is provided for Christians from the other part with the kind of anger with the kind of question we’re gonna believe we just started moving
I’m not blaming anybody but whenever I see the empty chair I’m gonna be angry what am I doing here not for the people who didn’t come but for to myself Joe you know I have a little bat over there that I usually use for kneeling down in prey yes I started doing that from two three weeks ago and I was kind of getting angry at myself
you look at this pastor Joe you call yourself a pastor and you see some problems and issues and you just talk about it you just you just think of you know resolving the problem by conversation and just finding answers from each other if you if you this person is a pastor that’s not the way to go you should kneel down to God and you should humble yourself down and find the answer if you don’t do if you don’t even do that don’t call yourself as a pastor I had this kind of anger and thought so driven by anger yes started doing the still angry little because I’m not doing the best yet I think so that was the little anger that I had to myself what is it what is your anger that you have toward yourself or toward any other or toward this world toward the society recently uh I am God from Netflix is breaking so many people’s heart and the content of the documentary is so disgusting I almost wanted to puke while watching that
a person called himself as Jesus just just get the money money out of some other people’s pocket and the wallet and by exploiting their wealth in their body to fulfill himself and he did them all in the way of selling the name of Jesus he did a disgusting things
and yeah I was I was very angry for that moment um
as a pastor what I can do uh there was a doiang there was a professor named Kim a mathematic Professor from Tongan University who made the group Exodus to find out the victims gathered them together and to catch the chongyangzok the cult leader but am I gonna be the one who’s gonna do that I don’t think so because I’ve never been there yeah but I was still angry with that anger I asked my question why did people why all those smart people from Sky Seoul Korea Johnson University why all those called who are called intels of this country the top Elite of the country why did they go and started worshiping that still a old man
what the answer is all happen because we didn’t share the word of God we didn’t teach the word of God in the church well enough most of the people who fell into the cult they had passion for learning the word of God they had all this curiosity about the faith and the church didn’t fulfill that Church didn’t fit them well
it might it might have been my case too so so that’s why I decided to to go deeper into the world and always after the sermon if you look at the bulletin some people I saw some people opening it and here’s a question you know they can go deeper about the sermon by sharing with your friends and we have small groups by the way after the service yeah have your time talking about this and always if you have questions you know any other questions that rose up after listening to the sermon talk to me whatever like there’s no privacy for me my cell phone number is over here yes just to shoot me out your SMS I’m yeah just ask me um get answers from me or from God
those were the ways of me birthing out my anger when does your anger burst how do you do that when was the last time you showed your anger toward any other person or and what was the reason for that or do you ever get angry do you even get angry for what’s happening whenever you hear something do you react or do you become any sensitive and think about that to talk about that regard how can we cultivate a sense of righteous anger that motivate us to do good rather than a sense of bitterness or resentment or or a pessimistic way just that leads to destructive Behavior think about them and don’t stop yourself from getting angry when you really have to so let me ask you once again are you angry for some moment do you ever get angry when was that how will you burst out your anger ask God and let’s have let’s get some answers let us pray Heavenly Father
thank you so much that we are worshiping here in a good place in a good setting and thank you so much God that we are not the victim of any cult heresy or we are not the victim of any crime we are not a victim of any natural disaster
but instead of sitting the couch back in my house or instead of just sitting around the safety zone sitting in my comfort zone instead of that
let us set the heart truly the heart that really pumps the hearts that is really alive to see and feel and to move by what we see and hear
let us have true let us truly have compassion let us truly have compassion you know let’s really love our neighbors as ourselves because it is a great command it is the greatest command that you ever asked us to do so
let us love but not just as a concept or emotion but truly by the action
let us be let us be the people who can reach out our hands to the neighbors in need and when we see the Injustice going on on this Society then let us hit the heart to pray for that instead of just talking about it let’s truly pray actually taking time actually taking two three or five minutes at least
live over Modern Age people is busy I know but we all have the five minutes for watching the watching little YouTube video or checking out our SNS once in a while with that three to five minutes beat that anger let us take our time pray and do what we heard from the prayer and that little action the little action of letting our anger go do not let them be destructive but rather let them be the anger and the rage that heals the society they build up each other and that builds up myself but then able to say pray amen
